There is no detail too small when it comes to the care we take at ECOlunchbox in delivering our mission-based products. As a B Corp, we go about being the very best we can be when it comes to building a socially and environmentally responsible business! While we're not always "perfect," we can promise you that we're always looking at our next move when it comes to implementing the greenest practices possible.

Since our founding in 2008, ECOlunchbox has endeavored to strictly avoid the use of plastic in all of our products. Our founder Sandra Ann Harris, who has published a book about her entrepreneurial journey called "Say Goodbye To Plastic: A Survival Guide for Plastic-Free Living," took it on as a personal challenge to build a company focused entirely on helping people ditch plastic at lunchtime and beyond. Our raison d'etre is to help families reduce their dependence on plastic by providing high-quality, plastic-free food container options.

Plastic Free Shipments

So, needless to say, we're no strangers to ditching plastic, but removing plastic from our shipments proved tough to accomplish until recently. We've been gradually weeding plastic out of our supply chain and shipments for the last decade. Most recently, in 2019 we announced a series of improvements to our packaging and shipping materials that have resulted in plastic-free shipments of all ECOlunchbox branded products.

We swapped the poly bags we used to protect our Blue Water Bento silicone lids from dust with recyclable tissue paper wrappers. The Blue Water Bento organic lunch bags are now shipped in recycled kraft bags. And the ECOlunchpod tucked in the top compartment of the Three-in-One Classic currently ships with a kraft paper belly band to prevent scratching in transit instead of a polybag.

We replaced plastic tape with recyclable kraft paper tape. Wherever we can, we are plucking out more and more plastic from our back-end operations, including when it comes to office supplies and our standard operating procedures as a certified California Green Business.

Unfortunately, not all manufacturers are going plastic-free yet. Some of our third-party accessories, like the Silicone Bento Cups (12 pack), Tableware Trio, and Silicone Smoothie Straws are still shipped in poly bags. Sadly, that's how these third-party manufacturers provide these accessories to us.

Carbon Neutral Shipping

To mitigate the climate impact of shipping our products, our UPS shipments travel carbon neutral! ECOlunchbox counter balances the carbon dioxide emissions generated by the transport of our UPS packages by purchasing carbon offsets. This means that for every ton of CO2 ECOlunchbox shipments produce in transportation, we fund an equivalent amount of CO2 saved by a verified emission reduction project. Global projects include reforestation, landfill gas destruction, wastewater treatment, and methane destruction.
